Youth Offending

Working in partnership with Southwark Youth Justice Service since 2018, we provide twice weekly workshop sessions for young people to attend.

Working with a dedicated and trained mentor and one of our staff mechanics the young people take part in a program of refurbishing bikes for the wider community – learning new skills at the same time.

We are one of the best attended of these projects and often see participants accessing our other Bikefix sessions for help with their own bikes, which we take as a win!

Working with an average of 110 young people across a year.

We thank Leila for outlining what our work means for the project and it’s participants:

Community Cycleworks is one of our most requested projects. Almost all of our young people have their own bike and so learning how to service and fix these themselves, is of real interest and a massive motivation to them and an important life skill for them to learn.

“They often comment that the best part of the session was learning to use the tools and completing tasks; which is a massive achievement for them, considering how many struggle with, and have been excluded from mainstream education and have not had that sense of achievement before.

“The young people thrive in these practical sessions, as the environment is conducive to learning – small groups, 1:1 support, clear and repetitive instructions, patient session leaders and a real understanding of how to communicate and engage with young offenders.

Community Cycleworks do not make our young people feel like offenders; they make our young people, who are often estranged from their local community, feel accepted and welcome.”

Learning to fix and bring your own bicycle back to life will bring a real sense of achievement.

To then be able to use the bike again as a means of transport is the cherry on top of the cream on top the cake!

If we can play a small part in helping these young people, then that’s a really smart thing to do and we’re proud of it.
